Schizophrenia treatment Wroclaw

As much as 1 percent of the population struggles with this disease - the statistics sound unbelievable, but on average 1 in 100 people suffer from schizophrenia, in various forms of this disease. There are many symptoms of schizophrenia - the disease mainly runs in the phases of exacerbation and relief of symptoms. Importantly, despite the stereotypes prevailing in the public space with many forms of schizophrenia, it is possible to function normally in everyday life and lead a stable lifestyle, both in terms of family and professional life, provided that appropriate treatment is implemented.

Schizophrenia is a chronic mental illness characterized by disorders in the way of thinking, perceiving, communicating and shallowed emotional expression. The dominant feature of schizophrenia is impaired perception of reality and changes in the patient's behavior. A schizophrenic is usually only interested in his own internal feelings, isolates himself from his loved ones and becomes incomprehensible to the environment, and the characteristic feature is also ambivalence, i.e. heterogeneity of experiencing, thinking and feeling. A patient with schizophrenia has the feeling that other people know his thoughts and present them to the whole world. He has the impression that he is constantly being watched and persecuted. Additionally, people with schizophrenia may also experience symptoms such as:

  • Visual, auditory, olfactory, taste and tactile hallucinations
  • Delusions
  • Memory gaps
  • Assigning one's own experiences to the environment
  • Feeling controlled and persecuted.

Most people with schizophrenia don't know they have the disorder. Very often they deny changes in their behavior because they simply do not notice them. In order to start the treatment and diagnosis process, it is extremely important to support relatives who will help the patient take the first steps towards recovery. The sick person does not talk about his delusions, and during the conversation he speaks little and is sometimes difficult to understand. People with schizophrenia are extremely sensitive to stress and can be helped by avoiding arguments, noise and keeping the home space calm.

It is estimated that approximately 24 million people worldwide suffer from schizophrenia. The disease is most often diagnosed in young adults (between 20 and 30 years of age). It is important, however, that starting treatment at an early stage of the disease increases the chance of a person suffering from a significant improvement in functioning in the future and reduces the need for hospitalization.

Schizophrenia is one of the most serious mental illnesses, the causes of which are not precisely established. It is most often indicated that people with genetic predispositions (cases diagnosed in the family) have the greatest risk of developing this disease. The cause of schizophrenia is sometimes traumatic childhood experiences, perinatal brain damage, and drug use can also influence the development of the disease.

Hallucinations are among the most frequently mentioned symptoms of schizophrenia in the social space. Indeed, in this disease it is extremely common for the patient to hear voices inside his head with whom he talks. Patients often declare that they hear knocking, murmurs, dialogues that do not exist, and which force the patient to take specific actions. The patient often laughs in serious situations and vice versa. His feelings have nothing to do with reality and are contrary to the situations experienced by the schizophrenic. The patient often sees various shapes, things, people that do not exist, and the diagnosed person has the impression that he is constantly being overheard, persecuted and that others want to hurt him. Particularly dangerous are voices urging the patient to commit suicide. It is estimated that in schizophrenia the risk of suicide is about 10% on average.

It is very important that in the event of an accurate medical diagnosis, according to which our loved one suffers from schizophrenia, we do not look for those responsible for the origin and development of the disease. Schizophrenia is never the result of a single event, and its emergence and development is influenced by a number of various factors - both biological and genetic, as well as social, which we, as relatives, cannot always influence.

However, if there are doubts as to whether a given person is mentally ill, they should be admitted to a psychiatric hospital for "psychiatric observation", but not longer than 10 days.
