Borderline Personality Disorder – Am I Living Too Much? Mental Health Center in Wrocław

Borderline personality disorder, the literal translation of "borderline personality disorder", is characterized by an extremely strong desire for a very close, exclusive relationship with a loved one. At the same time, this relationship is accompanied by a specific fear of being "absorbed" by a given person and, on the other hand, of being abandoned by that person. People with borderline personality disorder have difficulty perceiving the good and bad aspects of others at the same time. Often attitudes towards specific people are extreme, from admiration and idealization to hatred.

Borderline personality disorder is defined as a pattern of behavior dominated by instability in interpersonal relationships, self-assessment, sometimes with marked impulsivity. People with borderline personality disorder also develop an attitude of vigilance towards the environment, which is perceived as hostile and persecutory. For this reason, these people feel deprived of the ability to influence relationships with others.

Borderline personality disorder most manifests in relationships. They focus most strongly on how we enter or cannot enter into relationships, experiencing a constant tension between the desire to be close and the fear of being close. Therefore, stable relationships are impossible in this disorder due to the fact that when we enter them, we push them away ourselves. Borderline personality disorder is the disorder with the most clinical research. Thanks to this, many therapeutic trends have confirmed the effectiveness of treating this disorder in the sense of increasing the quality of life.

Do people with borderline personality disorder overexperience? It is difficult to say unequivocally whether this phenomenon applies to all people suffering from the indicated disorder. In borderline personality disorder, the sense of identity is certainly disturbed to a large extent. The sense of identity largely depends on what relationships I am in and whether I am loved. For this reason, people are sometimes said to "love too much." This mentalization, i.e. the ability to think about other people's thinking, is slightly shifted in this personality disorder, i.e. the patient thinks that he is the main object of other people's thoughts. In this sense, you can talk about overthinking. Excessive emotionality is therefore not a matter of empathy and understanding other people, but rather checking what feelings someone directs towards me, because it can be threatening from the patient's point of view.

In people with personality disorders, the issue of anxiety is extremely important and very often correlates with relational traumas at an early stage of development, not necessarily related to violence, but, for example, to emotional neglect or inadequate maternity care. In people with bordeline personality disorder in the early stage of development, the lack of physical or psychological presence of the father in the family is often noticeable, and relations in it are assessed as incoherent and chaotic. Then such people do not have a pattern of good and supportive relationships with others.

  1. Personality disorders – what determines the effectiveness of therapy? Mental Health Center in Wrocław | CZP24

The effectiveness of therapy in the treatment of personality disorders is in a sense "tailor-made". The effectiveness of therapy in the treatment of personality disorders is influenced by, among others:

  • Past relational patterns – if we assume that they are repetitive and non-adaptive, then they can recur in the therapeutic relationship. It is extremely important to include the so-called healthy aspects of personality, i.e. those that are not affected by the destructive process.
  • Hope – the attitude of the patient. People who believe in the success of therapy have a better chance of recovery.
  • Social support network - friends, acquaintances, family are our greatest allies in the fight against mental illness or mental disorder. Their support can be invaluable in increasing the possibility of restoring the patient to health.
  • Therapeutic relationship – the selection of the right therapist who will become our closest friend for some time is one of the key determinants of the success of therapy. Then we talk about the development of a therapeutic relationship in which the patient feels at ease and can openly experience all the dilemmas that his psyche is struggling with.

Is there a best form of therapy to treat personality disorders?

Personality disorders arise and manifest themselves in groups, therefore treatment in a group is extremely effective. There are studies that say that group therapy has the same high effectiveness, comparable to individual therapy. The group is a kind of "hall of mirrors" in which we can see ourselves in other people and gain a more complete picture of ourselves.

How long does therapy for people with personality disorders last?

Personality disorders are a condition that accompanies patients for a large part of life, forming at an early stage, and then manifesting in various relationships and various life situations. Long-term therapy in the treatment of personality disorders for this reason is an indication. Above all, it is important to develop a therapeutic relationship with a psychotherapist, and thus also the attitude that this relationship is important for the patient and that it is a field on which he can project his various relational experiences. However, time is needed for therapy to be effective. It is important for people with personality disorders to have a permanent space where they can view their inner world with a safe person like a therapist.

  1. I live in a close relationship with a person who I suspect has a personality disorder. What can I do? | Mental Health Center in Wrocław | CZP24

Personality disorders generate suffering in people experiencing them, but also in people in close relationships with them. For this reason, it is worth taking care of your suffering, how it affects my functioning. Perhaps through psychotherapy, couples therapy or in-depth reflection. It is important to be able to define what is the cause of suffering for a given person living in a close relationship with a person suspected of having personality disorders in maintaining such a relationship. At the Mental Health Center in Wrocław for the Psie-Pole district at ul. Bończyka 11-13 and at ul. Korzeniowskiego 18, we provide free, without referral and without queues, psychological and psychiatric help for both people in mental crisis and their relatives. If you suspect that a loved one suffers from a personality disorder, contact our facility for help. Our specialists are waiting for you from Monday to Friday, and in urgent cases a 24-hour helpline is available.

Let us remember that no personality disorder diagnosis is an excuse for us to hurt other people. Although some of the relational patterns in which a patient with personality disorder functions are unconscious, when someone talks about experiencing suffering in relation to us, the responsibility of such a patient is primarily to look at it and take responsibility for becoming aware of his disorder. My sufferings are not an excuse for specific behaviors hurting others, but they require specific care, e.g. by undertaking treatment in the form of long-term psychotherapy. Thanks to taking psychotherapy, we will then not only reduce our suffering, but also people who are in relationships with us, and at the same time we can make our relational patterns more flexible and learn new ways of dealing with feelings that we are unable to bear or change the defense mechanisms that are the source of suffering for others.
